Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach CA. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side as a child because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example that art can be an activist vehicle. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via the medium of art. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her life, but would spend every summer with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her college. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home for a specific member of the Jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. In this role, she launched her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
